The Museum of English Rural Life’s intriguing galleries tell the story of an important part of England’s history, exploring countryside, identity, environment, technology, culture and health. Exploring the galleries, you’ll discover stories that fascinate, surprise, and reveal the heart of rural England past and present. In 2019, The MERL won a Bronze Award in the Small Visitor Attraction of the Year at the Beautiful South Awards. The MERL is also an Ambassador on the Great West Way and encourage visitors to explore Reading and everything it has to offer.

Covid-19 Specific Information

The MERL opened in line with government regulations in September and met with Visit Britain's 'Good to Go' standards. Details of measures put in place can be found on the website.
Although closed again and unable to welcome groups to the Museum due to current COVID restrictions, advance bookings can be made for visits from April 2021 onwards, with the confidence that dates can be changed should circumstances require it. The group offer will be reviewed in line with changing government advice. Virtual Group Visits are also available.
